Walter McElroy

Walter "Huck-Hammer" McElroy Was born in Knoxville, TN on June 13, 1928, to the late Ethel and Edward McElroy. He was proceeded in death by his brother McKenzie McElroy, sisters Ila McElroy, Beatrice Moore, Elizabeth Murdock, Dorsey Ham and survived by sister Betty Lomax. He served in the United States Army (World War II) Private First Class at Fort Riley Kansas and USAR, Read Reserve, he met and married his wife of 74 years Mae E. McElroy. They moved to Knoxville, TN for a short while and then to Pittsburgh, PA where he worked as tractor trailer driver and supervisor for the United States Postal Service until his retirement. He was a prominent leader in his community where he served as leader for boys Basketball, Explorers, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and the Brownies. He was part of the Rod and Gun Club, he loved to fish, barbeque and celebrate birthdays, and holidays especially Christmas where no one could open a gift until he read their name and handed them their gift. He was also a father and mentor to many young men that he loved dearly. He started Walter McElroy Painting and Contracting because he loved to make money painting residential and commercial structures including apartment buildings, bridges, funeral homes, and churches. He utilized the business to train, mentor and guide many young men. Fond and loving memories will be cherished by his wife Mae, children Mary E. Bush (Cedric), Jay McElroy-Harris (Kenneth), Walter McElroy, Jr., Edward McElroy, LaRonda Page, Sean Edmonds; grandchildren Arielle L. Douglas, Brandon McElroy, Tiffany N. McElroy, Walter McElroy, III, and great grandchildren; Aubrey Douglas, Jonathan Hodges, Janiyah Hodges and Jada Hodges and a host of nephews and nieces. He was especially close to his nephew Gerald Chambers, niece Jamesena Saffell and extended family Clair and Lynn Wilson. Visitation will be held on Saturday, from 1pm until the time of service at 2pm, at D'ALESSANDRO FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY LTD., Butler at 46th Sts., Lawrenceville.
