May 24, 1940 - January 30, 2019
David Erling Grover Age 78, of Squirrel Hill, died peacefully on January 30th, 2019, after a long period of deteriorating health. He was born May 24th, 1940, in Highland Park, NJ, to Frank and Adelaide (Erling) Grover. He attended New Brunswick High School (class of '58), received his bachelor's degree from Gettysburg College ('62), and a Ph.D. from the Univ. of Kentucky ('67). Dave is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara (Wirth), his daughters, Jennifer (Mark) Wedgwood and Laura (Ted) Kirkpatrick, and five grandchildren, Sean, Quinn, and Ryan Kirkpatrick and Isabel and Jude Wedgwood. After serving as Captain in the US Army, Dave began a 34-year teaching career as a tenured professor of psychology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. While at IUP, he enjoyed introducing freshmen to his subject, mentoring graduate students pursuing careers in his field, and collaborating with colleagues on new areas of research. As Chair and Assistant Chair of the Psychology Department, Dave was instrumental in establishing its doctoral program, overhauling the undergraduate curriculum and encouraging gender equality and diversity. He received the College Natural Science and Mathematics Service Award and was designated Professor Emeritus. Growing up near the Jersey Shore, Dave enjoyed surf-fishing, swimming and crabbing for much of his early life. Bringing up two daughters in rural Marion Center, PA brought him hours of organic gardening, acres of lawn mowing, and too many DIY projects - all labors of love. After retiring in 2003, Dave took advantage of all Pittsburgh has to offer, attending the opera, symphony and public theater, cheering for the Steelers and Penguins, and contributing to the community as a member of the Allegheny Group of the Sierra Club and Squirrel Hill's Urban Coalition litter patrol. He enjoyed traveling with Barb to far-off places, hiking to see waterfalls in our national parks, and reading voraciously about human cognizance and the mind. His grandchildren brought him much joy; he loved watching them play on the basketball court, lacrosse and soccer fields and perform in dance recitals and band concerts. If they win at Texas Hold-em, Pop-pop deserves the credit. He will be missed. A Memorial Service is being planned for the future. Memorial Contributions may be made to The Galapagos Conservancy (www.galapagos.org) or a charity of your choice.
