Richard Hastings Keller

May 29, 1949 - December 18, 2020

KELLER, Richard Hastings Architect Richard Hastings Keller, born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on May 29, 1949 died Friday, December 18, 2020 at age 71 in Pittsburgh. He is survived by his three beloved children: James H. Keller (Rachel) of Scottsdale, Arizona; Christian Keller (Deirdre) of Pittsburgh; and Elizabeth S. Keller (Liam Cooney) of Pittsburgh, as well as brother William Keller, of Camp Hill, PA; sisters Mary Keller and Elizabeth Keller of Maui, Hawaii; and brother Christian Keller of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Additionally, he is survived by six grandchildren: Jude and Lucy Keller, Seamus and Dean Keller, and Olive and Fionnula Cooney, and his former wife, Sylvia M. Keller of Fox Chapel. Richard's architectural practice was based in Edgewood, PA for over 30 years. He was a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University's School of Architecture and specialized in public housing and multi-unit apartment and condo buildings. He also served for many years on the Edgewood Planning Commission. Richard was a kind and adoring father and grandfather. He loved basketball, which he both coached and played throughout his entire life. He enjoyed dogs, convertibles, sweets (chocolate in particular), cigars, and reading (most especially about American and World History). He spent a portion of every summer of his life on Nantucket Island where the Keller family home, The Observatory, gave him and his extended brood some of their finest and most cherished memories. Although Covid-19 restrictions prohibited loved ones from seeing Richard for much of the last year, two of his children, Elizabeth and Christian, were permitted to visit shortly before his passing so that they could say goodbye. A memorial service will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Richard's family asks that donations be made in his name to The Alzheimer's Foundation or to Edgewood Borough Youth Sports.
